A small flock of birds in flight rises diagonally from the end of the lettering towards the top right. The ink is solid black with no shading, set against plain pale skin and a plain light grey background.

You never learn the steps the way the others do. Mrs Ashdown, who has run the Pier Ballroom since the war, tells you so every Saturday while the band tunes up beneath the gold lettering on the bandstand. BELIEVE, it says, and under it someone has painted a scatter of birds lifting off the frame like a thrown handful of pepper. You have decided the sign is meant for the dancers and not for the lads from the Co-op who lean against the urn.

The night the council man arrives with his clipboard, the floor is nearly empty. He wants the hall shut by October. You stand by the fire doors with your sister's coat over your arm and watch Mrs Ashdown pretend she has not heard him. Then Ted Greave, the bandleader with the cracked clarinet, lifts the needle off the gramophone and starts a slow foxtrot nobody asked for, and you find yourself crossing the boards towards the one man who has never once asked you to dance.
You do not say anything clever. You hold out your hand, and he takes it as though he has been waiting since the first Saturday. The birds on the sign seem to tremble as the lights go down. Someone at the back whistles, and the whole floor lifts a little, the way a flock does when it decides all at once that the wire will not hold it.
