Belle and the Beast in a hand mirror on a calf
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo shows Belle and the Beast from the Disney film, framed in an oval hand mirror with a rose across the top and a patterned handle below. The shading is smooth with soft grey gradients on the figures and frame, and the mirror is centred on the leg. The image is a close, well lit photograph with a glossy surface and a hand at the top right edge.

Nobody in Harrowgate Lane believed the glass until the rose came up through it. Old Mrs Pell had bought the mirror from a tinker for a shilling and a promise not to look at herself before noon, and for a fortnight she kept the promise, polishing the oval frame each morning while the brass handle grew cold in her palm.

On the fifteenth morning she looked. Instead of her own grey face there was a kitchen she did not know, a long scrubbed table, and a broad man in a wool coat stooping to feed a brindled dog by the range. He had a laugh like a cart going over cobbles. Mrs Pell watched him for an hour and forgot to put the kettle on.
She returned every morning after that, and every morning the man looked up a little sooner, until one day he looked straight out of the glass and said, 'You're letting the heat out of the room.' She set the mirror face down on the sill and did not sleep. The rose on the frame had opened a single petal of silvered glass, and a drop of dew sat on it that would not dry.
When her nephew came to clear the house he found the mirror propped in the window, facing the garden, with a second handle carved on the back and the initials of a stranger scratched beneath it. He turned it over and saw only his own reflection. The glass was perfectly ordinary, and that was the first thing that frightened him.
