Belle and the Beast in loose watercolour sketch
Thigh · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows Belle in a yellow gown standing beside the Beast in a blue coat, drawn with loose black linework. Soft yellow, blue and orange washes and ink splatters fill the figures and spill beyond the outlines, with the Beast's head and arm cropped near the top of the design. The skin is photographed straight on against a leopard print fabric and a blue sock.

Marta Fenwick had the only yellow hands in Saltcote, and she was proud of them. Her father dyed wool in the old house at the bottom of the lane, where the weir ran brown with madder and weld, and every spring she stood at the vats stirring until her sleeves dripped gold. The stranger came up the lane on the first wet day of April, a broad man in a blue coat so deep with indigo it looked wet even when dry. He asked for a length of the yellow for his sister's wedding. Marta measured it herself, because her father had gone to the fair.

He came back every week after that, always in the blue coat, always with a question about the colours. Why did the weld take better in cold water? Could a dye be made from the crushed heads of the roses behind the house? Marta answered him sharply at first, then with pleasure, and by midsummer she had shown him the rose bed where the petals soaked in a copper pot.
On the last morning of August he did not come. Marta climbed the lane with a bolt of cloth under her arm and found the garden gate hanging open. Crushed petals lay across the path like spilt ink, and the copper pot was still steaming over a dead fire. Folded on its rim lay the blue coat. When she lifted it, the sleeves ran gold through her fingers, and somewhere beyond the hedge a voice she knew laughed softly, as if it had been waiting all summer to be asked.
