Abstract geometric figure on a lower leg

Geometric · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A tattoo of a stylised figure in profile, drawn with a bold black outline and broken into angular geometric facets. The figure's head and torso blend into sharp lines and dotted guide-like marks that extend up and down the leg. Soft orange and teal watercolour-style washes sit inside the shapes, with grey shading on the edges, and the design runs the length of the lower leg against a plain skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The glasshouse at Hollin Ridge had been cracked for eleven winters before anyone asked me to mend it. Mr Pardoe wanted the figure back on the north wall, the one who leant out of the glass as though she had heard her name called from the orchard. Nobody remembered who painted her. I found the old cartoon under a flowerpot in the potting shed, its corners gone soft with damp, and spent a whole evening holding it to the lamp.

The pencil lines ran past the edge of the paper. They climbed into the gutters and dropped beneath the staging, little dotted marks that a painter would never bother with unless a joiner had asked for them. Someone had meant the figure to run the full height of the house, splitting into facets as she rose, so that the frost would catch on her like light on water. I cut the orange glass from a sunset I had kept in a crate for years and the teal from a bottle someone had dropped in the rain butt.

When the last pane was leaded in, the low sun came through her at an angle nobody had planned. A bar of orange fell across the gravel and stretched to the sundial, and Pardoe stood in it with his hat in his hands, saying nothing for longer than was comfortable.

I left one of the dotted lines uncut, a gap no wider than a thumbnail. Next morning a single sprig of bindweed had pushed through it, and the figure seemed to look past the glass towards the orchard, as if she had finally heard her name.
