Outlined figures dancing in a ring on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows five simple outlined human figures linked hand to hand in a loose, rounded circle. The design uses a single thin black line with no shading or fill, leaving the skin visible inside each figure. The figures spread across the thigh with open space around them, and the photograph is taken straight on with the skin lit evenly against a white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The band at the Palais had given up on the waltz by eleven, so Mavis and the others simply held hands and went round. Nobody had told them to. Five of them had drifted together by the coat rack, Joe Dunmore with his bad knee, the two Pryce sisters who never agreed on anything, and Ruth, who had come only because her landlady had threatened to stop her tea. Someone started humming. The circle closed the way a rope closes around a post.

Ruth kept her eyes on the floorboards, where a dropped glove lay by a radiator, and counted her steps the way her mother had taught her, one two three, lift on the turn. Her hand was warm in Joe's and cold in the grip of the younger Pryce, and for the length of a tune it was the easiest thing in the world to be part of a shape nobody had drawn.

The lights came up at half past. The band packed their cases. The five of them stood a moment longer, still linked, laughing at themselves, until the caretaker began stacking chairs around them like a fence.

Ruth walked home alone under the lamps, but she went the long way past the bandstand, where she and the others had first joined hands on a dare, and she found she was still turning a little on every corner, as if the circle were only resting and would come back for her the following Thursday.
