Watercolour owl on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large owl with a striking eye sits centrally on the arm, built from loose black sketch lines. Splashes of blue, orange, red and purple wash across the body and wings, with the colour bleeding beyond the outlines. The design fills the frame vertically against a blurred background.

The rain had washed the blue off the ferns by the time Hettie reached the oak, so she set the jar down in the wet moss and waited for the owl to notice her. Her mother's wrists had stiffened over the vats that winter, and the job of carrying madder and woad up through Calder Wood had passed to her like a cold coin nobody wanted.

The owl was already there, perched on the lowest branch with its feathers bleeding out into the dusk the way wet paint spreads on lining paper. Nobody in Ashby Fold could say when it had first come. Her grandmother had called it the Dyer's Witness, because it watched every bolt of cloth that left the village and seemed to know which ones had been cheated on weight. Its eye was amber and sharp, and it looked at Hettie as though she were a line someone had drawn too fast.
She unstoppered the jar and tipped it onto the root. The owl did not eat. It shook itself once, slowly, and colour lifted off its body in drifts of violet and rust and a rush of red that hung in the air like smoke before settling over the river. By morning the mill-race ran blue as a jay's back, and the spoiled bolts drying on the poles along the bank had come up clean as milk.
Hettie climbed down with her hands stained violet to the wrist. At the cottage her mother looked at them for a long moment, said nothing, and held out a second jar.
