Bellflower stem on the back of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Colour · Photo
A small botanical tattoo shows a bellflower in bud and bloom on a thin curving green stem, with two leaves along its length. The linework is delicate and the petals are softly shaded in lilac and violet with light pink tones. The design sits centrally on the back of the neck, with the stem running downward and fading to a fine point against plain skin.

Dad called the bellflowers the little bells and never once let us pick them from the verge outside the Ferris wheel field, because the ground there belonged to the fair and the fair didn't like being robbed. So when Nell Pryor came round the back of the dodgems on the last Tuesday of September with a fistful of them, wet from the ditch, I told her she was going to get us both sacked.

She didn't care. She was nine months older than me and had already decided the whole Market Harbour season was boring. She tied the stems together with a shoelace and hung them from the hook on the generator cage, where they swung over the diesel smell like a row of small lilac lanterns. Dad found them at teatime, stood looking at them for a long time with a spanner in his hand, then went back to the waltzer without a word.
That night the wind came off the estuary and took the big top down. We lay in the caravan listening to the canvas crack, and I said I'd read that harebells rang when the wind got into them, and Nell said that was the stupidest thing she had ever heard. Then the bells outside started up, faint and steady, and neither of us said anything for a while.
In the morning the lorries were packed and the cage hook was bare. Dad had left one stem on the step of our van, the best bloom, bent over and dry at the tip. Nell pressed it in her atlas and kept it there for years. I still have the atlas.
