Lavender sprig on the inner leg

Fine line · Calf · Colour · Photo

A slender lavender sprig with two purple flower spikes rises from a thin green stem with two small green leaves. The linework is fine and the flowers are shaded in several tones of violet, with soft green on the stem and leaves. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a dark background, with the sprig angled diagonally and centred on the lower leg.

The road up to the dry stones was longer than anyone in Halsey had told Mirel it would be, and by the second hour her shoes had worn thin at the heel. She did not stop. Her brother Anto lay in the back room with a fever that came and went like a dog at a gate. The healer had said only that he needed sleep, and sleep had left the house the same week the goats did.

On the scree she found the lavender growing in the cracks of the rock, grey-green and loud with bees. The old women said the plant gave its scent only to someone who asked properly and took no more than two stems. So she knelt, asked, and cut two spikes with her grandmother's bone knife. As she made the second cut, the wind turned, and she heard a voice like her grandmother's telling her to leave the leaves on the stalk, so the plant would know to come back.

She carried the sprigs down wrapped in her apron, dried them over the hearth, and sewed them into a small linen bag that she tucked beneath Anto's pillow. That night he slept until the bells of the lower village rang for morning. The healer came, laid a hand on his forehead, and said the fever had broken. Nobody thought to ask where the sleep had come from.

In autumn Mirel climbed back up to thank the plant. The flowers had gone to seed, but where her cuts had been, two new stalks stood straight, each with a pair of small leaves curled like cupped hands. She left them standing and walked home lighter, and the bees stayed behind to keep them company.
