Lilac sprig on upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Colour · Photo
A slender stem with several clusters of purple and pink lilac blooms and green leaves rises diagonally from the bottom left toward the top right. The linework is fine and the petals are softly shaded with blended purple and pink ink, with the leaves in muted greens. The tattoo sits on the upper chest beside a black top and a thin gold chain, with plenty of clear skin around it.

The last lilac on Tern Hollow came into bloom in the third week of April, which Oona said was early and I chose to read as a sign, since I was tired and wanted one. I had taken the cutting myself from the north wall of the drowned chapel, wrapped in wet cloth inside my coat, and walked back along the causeway with it pressed to my ribs like something that might still be alive after the tide went out.

It rooted in a tray of recycled grey water under the south lamp. Sap came up the stem slowly, then all at once, and the clusters opened from tight knots into little bunches of violet that paled toward pink at their tips, as if the colour had been poured in from the top and not yet settled. The leaves were a green you no longer find under the dome, the muted kind that comes from old rain. The children gathered at the glass to watch, and the youngest asked whether the flowers would be the same next year. I said I hoped so, which was the most honest answer I had.
When the sprig was strong enough I cut a second slip and pressed the first into a tin lined with waxed paper, with a label in my square hand: lilac, north wall, Tern Hollow, for whoever comes after. Then I carried it down to the landing stage, where the boat waited with its engine ticking. The fog was thick enough to swallow the shoreline, and I could smell the flowers through the lid all the way across the water.
