Belong Everywhere script on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a close view of a pale inner wrist and forearm with a tattoo of the words Belong Everywhere in a cursive script. The lettering is drawn in thin, even black linework with a slight slant and looping strokes. The background is a soft, out of focus grey, and the words run diagonally across the skin.

Dear Nell,

The ferry from Oban was late again, so I wrote this on the back of a parcel docket while the mail van idled outside the Kinlochbervie post office. You will laugh, but the postmaster here, a Mrs Abernethy with hands like bread dough, asked me to stamp every letter with the sorting date and I did it wrong three times before she took the stamp off me. Your father would have enjoyed that. He always said I could not be trusted with ink.
The parcel I carried north was for the minister's widow, a jar of your marmalade and a pair of wool socks you knitted in the spring. She cried when she opened it, then made me sit by her range and eat two slices of seed cake. She asked where I was from. I said Glasgow, then Leith, then a flat in Bristol that I keep meaning to give up. She said that was a lot of places for one woman to be from, and I told her that was rather the point of the job.
I am posting this at dawn, before the rain sets in over the bay. If the lighthouse keeper's boy turns up at the door again asking for his brother's letters, tell him they went north with me and I will bring them back in March. And tell Mum I have not forgotten where I put her good scissors. They are in my bag, of course. Everything I own goes in the bag, and the bag goes wherever the post goes.
Your loving sister, Jo
