A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody comes to the lost property hatch at Ashby Junction on a wet Thursday unless they have lost something they can name. Mrs Okafor's daughter had lost a violin case. I had lost the afternoon to a dead kettle. Then the envelope arrived on my counter, left on the bench of platform four, and I saw the single word on the front before I saw the stamp.

It was addressed in brown ink to nobody I knew: Beloved, and beneath it, in smaller letters, Platform Four, Bench Nearest the Clock. The loops on the b and the long tail of the d had been drawn by someone who practised. Inside were two sheets, folded three times, dated 14 March 1958. The writer said he had waited on that bench every evening since the last Lincoln train stopped running, and that he would wait until the signal showed green for her.

I read it twice standing up, which is against the rules, and then I checked the register. The bench was logged. A man in a camel coat had left a letter there in 1958 and, according to a porter's note in pencil, had come back every Thursday for thirty years to ask whether anything had been handed in. Nothing ever had. Mr Kell, who opened the hatch before me, said he always bought a fresh pen on the way and never once sat down.

I didn't put the letter back on the bench. I filed it in the rack under B, between a bassoon and a boarding pass, where a person with a claim ticket might find it. The following Thursday it was gone, and in the book beside my own neat entries was one line in the same looping hand: Signal's still red. I'll keep the bench warm.
