Believe script lettering with flourishes
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the word Believe written in a looping, calligraphic script with a tall capital B and a long sweeping tail on the e. Thin and thick black strokes create the lettering, which is surrounded by curling flourishes that form a loose cloud-like outline. The design is fully black on a plain white background, centred and evenly spaced with no skin or body visible.

Ada had the gold leaf laid out on the trestle by seven, the way her father had taught her, the size brushed on thin as breath so the leaf would bite. The board was oak, salvaged from the chapel roof after the March storms, and it had to carry one word over the door of the Hollin Arms before the harvest fair. Tom from the forge had asked for something plain. Ada had decided on a flourish instead.

She drew the B first, tall and leaning, its loop pulled back like a hand reaching for something it had already dropped. The lettering was slow work. Each stroke had to be pulled in one movement, the brush loaded and lifted, and a wobble meant scraping the size off and starting again. By noon the e had its long tail sweeping under the ve, and she had curled the cloud of swirls around the whole word, the way her father always had, so it seemed to float above the wood rather than sit on it.
Tom came in with his cap in his hands and watched her work from the doorway. "The vicar says it's a foolish thing to paint over a public house," he said. "Who needs telling to believe?"
Ada didn't look up. "Nobody needs telling. They need reminding where the wall used to be." She touched the brush to the last curl and drew it out clean, then sat back on her heels and waited for the light through the window to move across the gold.
The next morning the sun came over the edge of the forest and caught the leaf all at once, and for a moment the word burned so bright that the dog from the forge stopped in the lane and barked at it until Tom came out to fetch him home.
