Wander script lettering design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the word wander written in flowing, hand-drawn brush script. The strokes are solid black with soft grey shading on the downstrokes and the trailing tail, which gives a sense of depth. The word sits centrally on a plain white background with generous empty space around it.

The kettle on the platform café at Carlisle has finally given up, so I am writing this on the back of a timetable while the 14:10 to Settle sulks on the far side. You will laugh, but I have decided to stop waiting for the train I was supposed to catch in March. Mr Haworth from the ticket office says the line flooded again near Appleby and the replacement bus will take the scenic route, which is apparently a threat.
I have spent the morning with a pencil and the back of a parcel label, trying to write down everything Father used to say about roads that went nowhere in particular. He said a good word for a wrong turn was a wander, and he said it so often that I never bothered to ask what he meant. I think he meant the long slow curl of a river that does not hurry to the sea, and the grey soft shading on the hills when the cloud drops low over the fells. I think he meant that he was happy, once, and that the happiness did not need a destination.
So I am keeping the ticket. The bus will come eventually, and I have a notebook, a bad sandwich and a pocketful of Father's pennies. If you come up at Easter, bring your boots and we will walk the old towpath to the viaduct, the way he did, and we will take our time about it. Leave the timetable at home.
Your loving sister, Marion
