Fine line script design reading love, with curled flourishes on each side, shown on a plain white background.

Love script with swirls

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows the word love written in a single flowing cursive script in black. Thin, even linework forms the letters, with a looping flourish extending from each end of the word. The plain white background leaves the design isolated and centred.

The fog came in off the Sound on the third night of the gale, and I had the lamp-room log open on the chart table when the wick began to smoke. Mrs Pryce's letter lay folded under the inkwell, where I had put it that morning to keep the damp off. She writes like a woman who learned her letters from a copybook in a cold schoolroom, every capital with a tail that runs off the edge of the line.

At the foot of the page she had written one word, larger than the rest, and given it a curl at each end, as if the pen had not wanted to leave the paper. I had read it perhaps forty times since the supply boat brought it. The word was love, and she had not signed her name beneath it, because there was no need. I trimmed the wick, rubbed the brass with the heel of my hand, and found my own hand had gone to the log without asking me.

Harold, my relief, came up the iron stair at four with the tea and found me standing over the ledger with the pen in my fist. He asked whether the light had failed. I told him no, it had only been asked a question it could not answer. He laughed, set the cup down, and called me a sentimental old fool, which was true enough.

When the beam swept out over the black water, I wrote in the margin of the log, beneath the wind and the barometer, the same word with the same flourish at either end. Then I climbed back to the lantern and kept the light turning for another hour, so that any boat out there would know which way home lay.
