Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A single word, Beloved, is written in fine black script across the back of a foot near the ankle. The linework is thin and even, with a flowing, handwritten lettering style and no shading. The skin is shown in close, natural light against a black and white chequered floor.

The telegraph boy came pedalling up the lane while we were still on the ladders, and Mother Hadley called me down before I had finished the Victorias. It was the last week of August. The wasps had found the windfalls under the Bramleys and the whole orchard smelled of sugar going sour.

The form was buff and creased from his pocket. Telegrams were charged by the word, and Ted had paid the clerk at Faversham that morning, so he had sent one word and nothing else. It was underlined twice in pencil, as if he had worried I would not take it seriously. I read it standing in the grass with plum juice on my wrists, then read it again, then a third time, the way you check a stair in the dark.

I had expected a ship's name, or a town with a hospital in it. I had not expected a word that could mean he was alive, or that he was sorry, or that he wanted me to know he had thought of me while he was counting out his pennies. Mother Hadley asked what it said. I told her it said he was well, which was not a lie, because the word was about me and not about him.

I folded the form into my apron pocket beside the bruised fruit and climbed back up the ladder. I picked the Victorias that were still whole and left the split ones for the wasps, and I did not hurry, because nobody was going to charge me by the word for the rest of the afternoon.
