Script quote across the top of a foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black script tattoo reading "he walks with me...", running diagonally across the top of a foot against a dark background. The letters are drawn in a smooth, even monoline with soft shading. The ink is solid black and grey on warm skin, and the lettering fills the centre of the frame.

Mrs Tregenza at the shop says the fog will lift by Thursday, but I have stopped believing anything the shop says. You asked in your last letter whether I still walk the cliff path alone, and I want to answer plainly. I do not. Since the boat went out in March I have walked it only with the lamp in one hand and the dog's lead in the other. It is poor company, though the dog is a good listener.

Your father never went anywhere without his notebook. Each spring he paced the cliff edge with a knotted cord and wrote the figures in pencil on the backs of old tide tables. The sea has taken eleven feet since he began. I found his last pages in the drawer under the clock, the one with the chart of Gwithian coves, and on the inside cover, in the hand he kept for letters he meant to send and never did, he had written: He walks with me...

I used to think that was a sentence for a man who was only half sure of his own return. Now I think it was simply where he stopped to light his pipe.

So I have decided to finish the walk for him. Tomorrow I will take the cord from its hook and pace the path to the stile, and I will set a stone at each post so the next person who comes will know where the land used to be. Write to me when you can, and tell me whether the Lisbon boats are running. I will keep the kettle warm and the lamp trimmed, and I will walk to the end of the field before I come back in.
