Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a clock tower resembling Big Ben, with a clock face, arched windows and a pointed spire, rendered in black outlines and grey shading. Below it a large red rose with green leaves wraps around the arm, with bold black linework and solid fills. The photograph is taken at a close angle against a grey background, with the wearer's black top visible at the edge of the frame.

Dorota had the ovens roaring by half past three, the only hour of the week when nobody on Ferry Lane wanted anything from her. She set the tins out in rows, lifted the damp cloth from the proving dough and peered at it the way Tomasz used to, as if it might confess something. Above the door hung the clock he had bought from a gift shop near the river in London, a brass tower with a pointed spire and a face that always ran four minutes fast. He had set it that way so he would never be late for anything, and she had never found the nerve to correct it.

He had been gone eleven months. The landlord's man came on Thursdays now with a clipboard and a face like a shut door, and each Thursday he looked at the ceiling as if measuring it for a different use. Dorota did not argue with him. She argued with the flour, the yeast, the stubborn rye that would not rise in the cold, and mostly she won.
At four she took the first trays out and brushed the crowns with honey and a little rosewater. Then she laid out the buns Tomasz had made every spring, rolled dough folded into petals and a dab of red jam pressed into the centre, so that each one looked like a rose opening in the dark. They were not on the menu. They had never been on the menu. The window was still black, and the street was empty except for a gull working through the bins.
At five she reached up and turned the clock back the four minutes, so that for once it told the true time. Then she unbolted the door, and the first customer came in out of the cold, asking for a rose.
