Lighthouse and roses on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A red and white lighthouse rises at the centre of the design, framed by a black linework sunburst at the top and two large roses at the base. Bold black outlines and solid fills sit alongside grey clouds, orange and blue sky, and dark rocks. Strong red, yellow and green colour dominates the composition, which wraps around the forearm.

The launch was late, so Dad lit the lamp before the sun had properly gone, which he said was the only sensible thing to do with a wedding on a rock. Tomas was somewhere out past the Carrick Shoals in a borrowed boat with his cousin at the tiller, and the fog bank that had been sitting on the water since noon had begun to think about rolling in. Dad didn't say anything about it. He just checked the wick, wiped the lens with the chamois he's used every evening for thirty-one years, and told me to stop fidgeting with the dress, which I'd only put on because Mum would have wanted it seen from the sea.
When the beam came round, it swept the rocks, the white spray and the bright petals on the steps, then went out over the water toward the place where the sun had been. Somewhere below us the horn sounded twice, thin and hopeful. Dad put his hand on the rail and counted the flashes under his breath, the way he had for every boat he had ever been afraid for. Then he stopped counting. The launch had come round the point, its white hull catching the light, and he stood there with his cap in his hands and let it come in.
