Church and rose on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A church with a tall spire, arched windows and a cross on top sits inside a thin outlined circle, with a large shaded rose and leaves in front of its base. The work uses bold outlines with grey shading on the roof, tower and petals to create depth. The tattoo is shown in black and grey on a leg, with the composition filling most of the frame.

The rain came off the river at a slant, the kind that found the gap between collar and neck, and Maud Pelling was still cursing it when Kit dragged the tarpaulin over the roses and knocked a bucket into the gutter.

The bell at St Aldous had been dumb since the October gale took the louvres out of the tower, and the market had got used to glancing up at the spire to check the time against the clock face instead. Agnes Cole came down the steps at half past eleven, as she did every Thursday, coins held in one glove, asking for a single white rose with the stem left long. Maud had sold her the same thing for nine years. Nobody on the stalls ever asked who it was for.

This week Agnes did not take it. She stood under the lych gate with water running off her hat and said the clock had stopped at ten past eleven, and that she wanted to know whether Maud had ever wondered why nobody had wound it since. Maud said she hadn't. She handed over the rose anyway, and Agnes walked back towards the arched doors without opening her purse.

By four the rain had thinned to a grey mist, and the cross on the spire caught the last of the light above the rose window. Maud counted the takings, then the buckets, and found one stem left wrapped in newspaper. She tucked it inside her coat and walked up the hill, not yet sure who it was for.
