Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet are shown side by side against a plain white background, each with a single line of cursive script. The left foot reads big sis and the right reads lil sis, both in thin, dark black ink with even linework. The image is in black and white, with soft lighting that shows the skin texture and keeps the focus on the lettering.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the kettle. You want the story of the Marigold, then you'll have it the way my grandmother gave it to me, on this same cabin step. Two sisters, Nell and Bet Okewood, and a narrowboat that never once went in a straight line.

The elder, Nell, had the tiller from the age of nine, because she was the one who could hold a rope without crying. Bet was four years behind her and followed everywhere, setting her boots in her sister's prints along the towpath mud, so that the lock-keeper at Stoke swore there was only one child on the bank with two pairs of feet. Nell painted BIG SIS in her careful hand on a scrap of tin and nailed it above the stove. Bet, not to be outdone, scratched LIL SIS into the bow with a horseshoe nail, crooked as a garden fence.

The winter the canal froze at Bratch, Nell walked three miles through the snow for the doctor, and when the doctor finally came up the towpath he found the stove lit and the kettle singing. Bet had done it herself, kneeling on the cabin floor with her sleeves rolled to the elbow, following the steps her sister had shown her a hundred times. Nell stood in the doorway with frost in her hair and understood that the small one had been following her for years only because she had been learning the way.

In the spring Nell gave her the tiller. Bet stepped onto the stern with her chin up, and when she looked back at the bank there were no prints in the mud behind her but her own.
