Fine line arrow tattoo on ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot and ankle rest on a light surface, with a small fine line tattoo above the ankle bone that looks like an arrow with a looped, swirled tail. A second small mark resembling a semicolon sits on the hand or finger that is touching the ankle, and the hand has dark painted nails. The photograph is black and white, with soft shadows and the subject filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are standing in the vestry of St Keyne's with a safety pin between your teeth, because the bride's veil has come loose and nobody else thought to bring one. Outside, the rain has stopped and the gravel is loud with the Ferris cousins' shoes. Aunt Marion presses a folded sheet into your free hand and asks you to read it if the best man bottles it, which he will, because he has been sick twice already.

The speech is three pages of what is really one sentence, broken up by semicolons, each one a breath her late husband took before saying something kind about the boy's mother. You count them while the pins go in. Seventeen. On the last page he has drawn a small arrow in biro, its tail curled like the spring of an old clock, pointing off the bottom edge of the paper as if the rest of the sentence had walked out of the room.

When the moment comes you stand up in the hall with the paper shaking, and the room goes quiet at the first semicolon, then the second, and by the seventh a woman in the third row is laughing into her handkerchief. You don't hurry. You let each pause stand, the way he meant it, so the sentence keeps going out through the open windows and over the wet fields toward the sea.

Afterwards the bride finds you by the font and asks where you learnt to read like that. You fold the paper back into quarters and tell her you didn't, you just followed the arrow, and she takes your hand and walks you out into the light.
