Solid black biohazard symbol tattoo with heart-shaped cutouts in its centre, placed on the back of a person's neck.

Biohazard symbol with heart on the neck

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black biohazard-style symbol sits centrally on the back of a neck, with its three curved arms enclosing a cluster of heart-shaped negative spaces. The ink is a uniform dark blue-black with crisp edges and no shading, so the design reads as a flat silhouette. Loose strands of hair and an earring are visible at the top edge, and the skin around the tattoo is plain and lightly lit.

The stencil is cut from an old oilcloth tablecloth, and you hold it flat against the barrel with your thumb while Nell scrapes the bristles across it. Eleven barrels are waiting on the Crane Quay, and the port inspector is due at the turn of the tide with his clipboard and his cold tea.

Everyone in Saltmarsh Haven knows the sign: three curved blades around a hollow centre, painted on every door of the fish-meal sheds up the estuary. You learned it at fourteen, sweeping the yard at Brackley's. Nobody told you the gaps between the blades were hearts until Tom Abney drew one on the back of your hand with a carpenter's pencil and said the lighter could wait for him to finish.

The inspector arrives smelling of pipe smoke and wet wool. He reads the stencil, wrinkles his nose, and asks what's inside. Fish meal and lamp oil, you tell him, which is true enough. He reaches for his pen to refuse the manifest, then his eye snags on the hollows and he stops. He looks at the quay for a long moment, then signs his name in a hand that shakes a little. Nell asks no questions. Neither do you.

By the time Tom's lighter clears the breakwater, the barrels sit low and grey on the deck with their warning facing the gulls. From the wall, the only thing you can still read is three black arms closing around the one shape nobody thought to ban.
