Heart and arrow line tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single black line forms a looping, heart-like shape with a small cross mark across it and an arrow extending down and to the left. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a dark background, with the design filling the centre of the frame.

The ink had thickened in the cold, so I warmed the pot against my wrist as Brother Oswin taught me, then went back to the letter I had not finished since Lauds. Abbot Gregory forbade lifting the pen mid-word. A lifted pen, he said, was a sin of hurry, and hurry was the one sin the stone walls could not keep out. So I learned to write without stopping, looping each letter into the next until one thread ran across the vellum like a track through snow.

Mother Hild's letter had come up the valley road on the carter's cart in March. She wrote that the river had taken the lower mill again and the bridge at Wenlow with it, and that she would not be coming to the feast of Saint Brendan after all. I read it three times by the gate. Then I copied it word for word into the archive book, because that was my duty and I had never refused it.
The copying took until the bell for Compline. Somewhere in the middle my hand drew a loop where the word beloved should have gone, and I did not stop to correct it. I struck it through with a short stroke, the way the old masters marked errors they meant to keep, then ran the line down and away to the edge of the page, where it ended in a point.
When Brother Oswin came to lock the press, he tilted the book to the candle and read the page twice. He said nothing of the cross. He only tapped the arrow, which bent south and downhill toward Wenlow. "You will want the mule at first light," he said, and went out to ring for the night office. In the morning I took the mule.
