Biomechanical forearm tattoo with torn skin
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo covers the forearm and shows skin ripped open to reveal grey metallic mechanical components, including plates, rivets, cylinders and rods. The metal is rendered with detailed highlights and deep shadows, giving a three-dimensional, lifelike effect. The torn skin edges use warm flesh tones and the metal is mostly greyscale, and the arm is shown from the elbow side against a tiled floor.

The pump house at Carrow Dale had been silent since the winter the Hennessey shaft flooded, and nobody in the village talked about the day the engineer's son went down to fetch the spare rods. Old Mair Teague kept the key on a loop of wire around her wrist, and she would not let the children touch the iron door. Her grandson Dai asked her why, and she told him the pump was not dead, only resting, the way a man rests with his sleeve rolled up after a hard shift.

When the rains came that spring, the water rose in the cellars of the chapel and the miners' row, and the men stood about in the lane with their hands in their pockets saying nothing useful. Dai went to the pump house alone with a lamp and a bottle of tea. Inside, the great cylinders stood in their rows like sleeping cattle, plates bolted over plates, the rivets dull as sheep's eyes. He touched a rod and it was cold, and then it was not cold, and a low hum came up through the soles of his boots.
He did not know how long he stood there. When he came out the rain had stopped, the lane was wet and shining, and his own forearm ached as if something under the skin had been asked to lift. Mair looked at the torn place where his sleeve had split and said nothing at all. By summer the water had gone down the old levels, and the pump house door stood open to the sun, and Dai never again needed a key to get in.
