Biomechanical hand tattoo
Realism · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A hand is covered with a biomechanical design made of metal plates, rivets, pipes and mechanical joints that wrap across the back of the hand and along each finger. The shading is smooth and detailed, with copper and rust-red highlights on the metal parts and dark grey and black areas that give the impression of depth. The hand fills the frame against a blurred, pale background, with a person's arm visible at the right edge.

The machine room smelled of hot dust and oil. The drive housing sat in the middle of the floor like a beetle someone had armoured. Rivets ran along its seams in neat rows, pipes curled out of it and into the wall, and the brass wheel inside was bolted under a skin of riveted plates that had gone the colour of rust where the damp had got in. It took her until three in the morning. A pawl had seized on the third tooth, and once she freed it with a file and a drop of oil from the tin in her bag, the wheel turned with a long, satisfied groan that she felt through her knuckles. Somewhere below, the cabin shuddered, then began to fall smoothly through the shaft, its cables humming like plucked wire.
She waited until the bell chimed on the ground floor. Then she took the pencil from behind her ear and wrote beneath his words, in her own careful hand: it held.
