Owl design on the back of a hand
Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical owl motif with large eyes and an ornate, lace-like body fills the back of the hand, extending onto the wrist. Fine lines, curls and dotted strands trail down towards the fingers, which are fully visible against a woven bamboo mat. The design is a single dark brown-black ink with no shading, and the composition is centred and evenly lit.

The rain had been falling on the spice market since before dawn, and Mirela had stopped trying to keep her stall dry. She sat under the tarpaulin with a ledger open on her knees, counting the bundles of saffron threads that no one had come to buy. Across the lane, old Tomas was packing his brass scales into a crate, shaking his head at the sky as if it owed him money.

A boy came running through the puddles with a bird's feather tucked behind his ear and asked whether she sold owls. She told him she sold nothing that flew. He laughed and said his grandmother had drawn an owl on the back of his hand for his cousin's wedding, that it had lasted three weeks and then faded to a rust-coloured ghost, and could she give him something that would stay. Mirela looked at his hand and saw the lines of dye, the dots running down toward his fingers like falling rain, and she thought of the mat her own mother had woven, the one with the bamboo strips that caught the light.
She took a clean reed pen from the tin, dipped it in the dark paste she kept for the harder recipes, and drew slowly, starting at the wrist. Two round eyes. A body made of curls and small lace loops. Dots trailing from its breast to the knuckles, one for every coin she had ever refused to haggle over. The boy held still and did not ask how long it would take.
When she finished, the rain had thinned to a drizzle. The owl sat on his hand, dark and patient, watching the stalls shutter one by one. Tomas had gone. Mirela wiped her fingers on her apron and wrote one line in the ledger, under the saffron: a bird that stays.
