Bird and daisies on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small black line drawing of a bird in flight holds a thin stem with two daisy-like flowers, one pink and one blue, with black leaves. The bird is drawn with tapered black strokes and the flowers have simple solid petals and dark centres. The design sits on the inner wrist against plain pale skin, with the flowers to the right of the bird.

The grey dove landed on the rail beside the fish market just as the gulls were fighting over the morning's gutted herring, and it sat there as calm as a deacon while they screamed. Nobody in Porthkerris kept pigeons anymore. You stood with your hands wet from the ice tray and watched it turn its head, once left and once right, as though it were checking the harbour for someone who had promised to meet it.

A length of red thread was knotted around one leg. The knot was your sister's knot, the sheepshank she used for mooring lines when she was a girl and bragged about it. Under the thread the bird carried a stem with two flowers, a pink daisy and a blue one, their leaves dark as spilt ink. You worked the knot loose with a fish hook. Rolled inside the stem was a strip of paper with a single line in pencil: the blue one is for the water, the pink one is for the steps.
You had buried Ada in March, under the wind-bent hawthorn above the lifeboat house, and you had not expected her to write to you. You hadn't expected anything at all. But the dove was already restless, lifting its wings in small impatient shrugs, so you walked it down the slipway to the old bollard where the tide slapped green weed against the stone.
You tied the blue flower to the iron ring and set the pink one on the top step. The dove rose, circled the breakwater once, and went out over the grey water toward the light, its wings drawn in the same black strokes as the stem it had left behind.
