Swirled butterfly on upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a stylised butterfly made from curling, tendril-like swirls and thin outlines. The linework is solid black with no shading, and the design sits off-centre on pale skin just below the collarbone. The plain skin background and close framing keep the focus on the tattoo.

The gallopers at Pennick's travelling fair needed new crests before the Lammas fête, and Ada Vell was the only one left on the road who could bend iron without scorching it. She worked nights at the back of the ironmonger's wagon, heating rods in a brazier and curling their ends with a pair of pliers her father had worn smooth. A curl, he used to say, must be finished before it cools, or it will crack and tell you so.

The woman who came to the wagon on the third evening wore a grey coat too heavy for the weather and paid in horn buttons. She wanted a butterfly for her gate, she said, but not one with wings that could fly off. Give it tendrils, she said, that wind round themselves and keep to where they are put. Ada made the outline from a single rod and let the swirls grow from it, one loop folding into the next until the thing had weight and a direction to face. When she looked up, the woman had gone, and the buttons were warm in her palm.
On the last night of the fair the lead horse's crest came loose, and the whole row of painted gallopers went quiet in the dark. Ada found it in the wet grass, the tendrils opened flat as a hand, and a pale thumbprint pressed into the iron where something had held it. No one on the field remembered a grey-coated woman, and the ledger had no entry for a gate.
Ada hung the crest back on the horse herself before dawn. She bent each curl shut slowly, one at a time, and she finished every one before it cooled.
