Bird and infinity symbol on the side

Fine line · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised bird in flight, drawn in thin black linework, with its tail extending into an infinity symbol. Soft pastel shading in pink, lilac and mint green fills parts of the bird's body and wing. The design sits across a bare patch of skin, with a colourful patterned fabric edge at the top of the frame.

The snow came in sideways off the fell after dinner, and by four the top field is one white sheet with the wire fence the only line through it. You stand at the gate with the feed bucket and count the ewes as they come down the lane. You lose the count at eleven, because the light has gone the colour of mint ice and you can't tell which grey shape is Nell and which is a drift.

Your father used to say you could tell how a winter would go by how the swallows behaved. Every October he chalked one on the inside of the barn door, its tail curling back on itself until the line met its own start. He told you that was how the birds kept the way home: round and round until the weather broke. You never believed him. You thought he drew the loop because he could never draw a straight tail to save his life.

The barn door is still there, though the farm isn't yours any more and the letting agent's van is parked where the milk lorry used to turn. Under the sleet you find the old bird, grey now and half rubbed away, and beside it a fresh loop someone has traced with a wet finger, not quite on the line.

You stand there with the bucket until your fingers ache. Then you pick up the chalk stub from the sill, finish the loop the way he showed you, and go back out into the snow to bring the last of the ewes in.
