Family script within an infinity symbol
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A healed or fresh black tattoo of the word family in cursive script, set within an infinity symbol with swirled ends. The linework is fine and even, with thicker strokes on the outer loops of the infinity shape for contrast. The design is in solid black ink on pale skin and is centred horizontally across the frame, with fabric visible at the top edge.

The ring corridor has been turning for two hundred and six years, and you are the one who walks it on the night shift. Past the seed cradles, past the hydroponic bays where the basil has gone wild, you follow the curve of the hull until the lights change colour and the word appears above the hatch to Deck Nine. Nobody aboard the Meridian Bell remembers who painted it there, only that it was done by hand, in a looping script that doubles back on itself before it reaches the end.

Your grandmother told you the first crew argued about that lettering. One wanted the name of the founding house. Another wanted the mission code. The engineer who won simply wrote family, then drew a long figure of eight around it so the word could never find its way to an edge. "Everything we are has to come back round," she said, tapping the glass of the observation port, "or we are just cargo."
Last week the counter on the forward reactor stopped matching the one in the log. You spent three nights in the crawlspace with a torch clamped under one arm, tracing the cable through every junction it had ever been spliced at. At the fourth junction you found a child's handprint pressed into the solder dust, and beside it a strip of tape reading return by the second bell.
You sat back on your heels and laughed until the echo came back down the pipes. The fault was a loose clip, nothing more. But the handprint had been left by someone who knew the ship would still be listening when they were gone, and you wrote the date under it in your own careful hand before you closed the panel.
