The gull came back to the chapel roof again this morning, the one with the broken lead, and sat there shouting at me like it had lost something. I told it you'd gone to the city on the Tuesday carrier and it had no business waiting. It looked at me sideways the way your grandfather used to when I'd spent the housekeeping on ribbon.

You asked in your last letter whether the forest still comes right up to the back gate. It does. The beeches have gone copper at the edges and the path past the charcoal burners is soft with leaf, so mind your boots if you come home at Christmas. Mrs Pargeter's boy has been cutting through it with a handcart to save the long road, and I've told him that's how the stories start, with a boy and a shortcut.

Here is the thing I wanted to put down. Last night I went out to the gate with the lamp and a cup of cold tea and waited, the way I did when you were small and wouldn't sleep. A pair of birds went over low, heading west, with a sound like a page being turned. I didn't wish on them. I only thought, go on then, take the word with you. Go far, the way you'll have to.

Write to me from wherever the post stops. I'll keep the gate latch oiled.
