Pine tree, mountains and sun on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black line tattoo of a tall pine tree sits beside two peaks drawn with parallel hatching, with a small open circle above them as the sun. The linework is thin and even, and the design is shown in black ink only against pale skin on a textured grey fabric. The composition is centred on the forearm with plenty of clear space around the motif.

Dear Marguerite, the wind has finally dropped, so I can write without the pencil skidding off the page. The lookout hut sits on the shoulder of Gallow Fell, and from here the whole valley lays itself out like a map somebody has been folding and unfolding for a hundred years. Yesterday I counted seven ridges I'd never noticed before, and one lone Scots pine standing on the spur below the tarn, so stubborn it leans into the weather like a man leaning into a door he means to keep shut.

You asked in your last letter whether I was lonely up here. I am not, not in the way you mean. The mountains do the talking and I do the listening, which suits me better than the village ever did. The sun comes up behind the eastern peaks at half past five and takes its time clearing their shoulders, a small round coin of light that the mist keeps trying to swallow. Every morning I log the time and the wind direction in the book, then sit with my tea and wait for it to be properly day.
The ranger from Ambleside came up on Tuesday with the new radio and a box of biscuits that had been crushed flat in his rucksack. He stayed for supper and told me the pine on the spur is older than the church, older than the wall, older than anybody's grandmother. I said I would believe it when it stopped leaning. He laughed and said it had been leaning since before the Romans and had no intention of stopping now.
I'll post this with the Thursday supply. Keep the lamp lit for me in the back window, love, and I will look for it from the top of the rise every evening until the dark comes down and the sun goes out like a candle left on the sill.
