Bird on a blossom branch on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a solid black silhouette of a small bird perched on a leafless branch that curves across the forearm. Small pink blossoms sit along the twigs, and the branch tapers to fine points at its ends. The design is set against plain skin with a dark blue sleeve at the top edge and a dark background, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

The blossom came out early that year, which Dorothy said was a bad sign for a fair still on the road in March. She stood at the back of the trailer with a flask of tea going cold in her hands and watched Eli drag the last tarpaulin off the gallopers. Pink petals had blown across the market field at Kelso and stuck to the wet grass like confetti nobody had bothered to sweep.

He had been carving the lead panel for a fortnight, a flat sheet of tin cut to the shape of a branch with a small bird settled at the top. Old Ray, who built the roundabout before his knees gave out, had always said the silhouettes should be black and plain, no feather lines, so the children on the horses could see the shape from the gate. Eli had argued for detail. Ray had won, though Ray was in the hospital in Carlisle now and nobody had told him the argument was still going on.

That night Eli painted the blossoms on with a rag dipped in cheap pink enamel, dabbing each one until the tin looked like it had been left out in the rain and forgotten. Dorothy watched him fix the panel to the canopy and asked why he had turned the bird so its back was to the crowd. He said it was facing the road south, where the lorries would take them in the morning. She didn't argue. When the lamps came on, the small black bird sat on its bare branch above the empty horses, looking out past the fence at the dark lane, as if it had only stopped for a moment and meant to be off before anyone asked it to stay.
