Bird, rose and folding fan line drawings
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
Two black outline drawings sit on a white surface: a small bird perched on a stem with a rose, a fan with two peony blooms and a flowing ribbon, and a rose with a bead string and small flowers at the lower left. The linework is bold and even, with no shading, and the composition places the bird at the top left and the fan at the right. The image is in black ink only, with a mug partly visible at the top edge.

Shuffle in, the lot of you, the awning only keeps the front row dry. Now, Sal Brannigan sold fans on this market for forty years, and every one was folded by hand in the back room above the fishmonger's, where the gulls couldn't get at the paper. Her husband had gone out on the Mary Jane one February and never come home, so she kept his letters in a biscuit tin under the counter, and she never once sold a fan she could not fold herself.

The Thursday the rain came in sideways, a little brown bird dropped off the gutter of the covered stalls with a sprig in its beak. Pale rose stem, one bud, and a string of seed pearls snagged in the thorns, as if someone had been careless with a necklace. It hopped along her trestle, past the peony fans, and set the sprig down on the one fan she had never put out, the one with the long ribbon. Then it sat there looking at her, as if it had been sent with a question and was too polite to ask it.
Sal lifted the fan. The ribbon slipped its knot and ran off the edge of the table, across the wet cobbles, past the fishmonger's bins and down the steps to the harbour wall. She followed it with her umbrella up, and at the bottom, looped round a rusted ring, was a tin exactly like hers. Inside were four letters, sealed, addressed in a hand she knew, and a single pearl necklace folded in tissue.
When she came back up the steps the bird was gone, and the rain was running off the peonies like ink off a page. Mind the ribbon when you buy, love. It always knows the way back.
