Perfume bottle and flowers design sketch

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A black line sketch on cream paper showing a perfume atomiser bottle at the top, with ornamental scrollwork curling beneath it. Two open five-petalled flowers with leaves and small sprigs sit at the lower left, and a powder compact with a grid pattern appears at the lower right. The linework is fine and even, with no shading or colour, and the design fills the square frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Joan had been holding the atomiser for ten minutes before she realised it was empty. She pressed the rubber bulb anyway, out of habit, and a thin cough of nothing came out. Across the hall, Denise Pryor glanced up from the trestle table and laughed, as if they were fifteen again and Joan had just ruined a hymn.

The reunion was in the old grammar school gym, now a community hall with a leaking roof and a raffle for a hamper nobody wanted. Joan had come in her good navy coat, the one with cuffs she had turned twice. Denise had brought a photograph album with a broken spine. They had not properly spoken since the spring of the lower sixth, when the drama society cast Denise as Viola and Joan had learned every line in secret anyway.

"You still carry that old thing?" Denise nodded at the compact in Joan's palm, its grid of tiny squares rubbed smooth at the corners. It had been Joan's grandmother's, lent for a school dance and never asked for back. Joan flicked it open. The powder had gone to a grey crust, but the little mirror still caught the strip lights and threw back a face that looked older than she had expected.

"I'm giving it back," Joan said. She set it on the table between the raffle tickets and the photographs. Denise picked it up, turned it over, and found the catch with her thumb. The lid snapped shut with the same small click it had made in the cloakroom thirty years before, and for a moment neither of them said anything at all.
