Lace-cuffed hands with pansies
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink line drawing of two hands in lace cuffs, one with a cluster of pansy-like flowers and leaves at the wrist and the other in a patterned glove with a ring on one finger. The linework uses bold outlines with hatching and stippled shading on the hands and cuffs. The design is in black ink on a pale background and is composed as two separate motifs stacked diagonally across the sheet.

The stationmaster at Kettle Bridge had a habit of counting gloves. Every Thursday the lost property box came up from the platform cupboard, and every Thursday he laid out what was in it on the ticket counter: a single child's mitten, a glove with the thumb gone, a silk pair that smelled of violets. He wrote each one in the book. Nobody ever came back for them, so the book grew fat and the gloves went to the church jumble.

One November a woman came off the night train with a basket and no luggage, and she asked him, before anything else, whether anyone had left a pair of lace cuffs. Not gloves, she said. Cuffs, the frilled kind that buttoned to a sleeve. Her sister had lost them on this line forty years before, and she had promised to bring them back to her before the sister died.
He said he had nothing like that. She nodded as if she had expected it and sat on the bench under the clock. He went back to his book, and after a while he heard her humming a hymn with the wrong words. Then he heard the hiss of the signal lamp outside and realised he had been sure of his answer without looking.
He went down into the cupboard. Behind the coats, in a tin that once held barley sugar, were two pairs of cuffs, one plain and one worked with a pattern of little leaves, stiff with dust. He carried the tin out and set it on the counter beside the book. The woman stood up and did not say anything at all. She took the plain pair and left the leafed one for him to give to whoever came next, and she walked out into the dark toward the bridge, buttoning her cuff as she went.
