Bird skull with roses and crystals

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A bird skull in profile sits at the centre of the design, with its eye socket drawn as a circle containing a four-point star. Two open roses, hatched leaves and a cluster of pointed crystals frame the skull, and small sparkle marks float around the edges. The work is drawn in bold black outline with fine internal hatching and no colour, on a sheet of white paper with tape at the corners.

Dear Isidora, the raven came back to the tannery roof the morning after the caravan left, and I knew then that Father would not be home before the rains. You always said the birds were the only honest messengers in Petra, so I have decided to trust this one with my news. Its skull is in the window box now, bleached white, the beak worn to a blade by weather. Mother wanted it thrown on the midden, but I washed it in rose water and set it on the sill, and the roses Ptolemy planted along the wall have opened all at once, as though they had been waiting for permission.

The crystals are the real trouble. Nasir came up from the cutting-yards with a sack of them, clear as creek ice, and swore he had pried them from the wall of the old cistern where the spring goes dry. I held one up to the lamp and saw a little star caught inside it, four points, as steady as the one above the tomb road. I thought of you laughing at my fear of the cistern. I did not laugh.

Before the rains I will take the skull and the crystals to the eastern gate and set them under the carved lintel, where the travellers pass. If the star is real, let it watch them out. If it is not, then the roses will at least have been worth the trouble.

Write your answer soon, and tell me whether the stone in the cistern wall is still humming. Your sister, Dorcas
