Bird with spread wings on an ankle

Traditional · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bird with its wings spread wide in flight is shown in solid black outline with grey shading. Fine parallel lines define the feathers along both wings, and a single curved talon hangs below the body. The tattoo sits across the ankle on bare skin, photographed against a light fabric background.

The kestrel had been in the atrium since before the handover, shuffling along the top of the glass canopy like a man who'd lost his keys. By two in the morning it had dropped onto the reception desk, knocked over a box of gloves, and stared at us with that flat, unbothered look they have.

Sister Achterberg wanted it out before the porters came on. I wanted a blanket. We argued about which was worse, the bird or the paperwork, until Dev from radiology came down pushing a wheelchair with a fire-door wedge balanced on it, which I still think was the least sensible thing anyone did that night. The kestrel took against the wedge and flew straight up into the lights, wings wide enough to brush both sides of the stairwell.

We spent forty minutes herding it. Every time it settled on the rail above the lifts, one of us would start toward it and it would drop off again, talons out, one curved claw catching the light like a sickle moon. Nobody got hurt except my pride. Eventually Sister A simply switched off the atrium lights and propped the main doors open onto the car park, and the building went quiet except for the hum of the drinks machine.

It sat on the bollard for a while, looking at us as if we'd been the ones who got lost. Then it dropped, cut low across the tarmac, and rose over the ambulance bay where the sodium lamps turned its wings the colour of weak tea. I went back in to finish my charts. Sister A said it would make a good story for the Christmas do. I told her nobody would believe the bit where it looked at me.
