Birdcage and swallow on a upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with her hair tied back is photographed from behind, showing a fine line tattoo of an open birdcage centred on her upper back. A small bird sits inside the cage, and a tiny swallow in flight appears above her left shoulder blade. The linework is thin and black with no shading, and the image is in muted tones against a dark background with a green top at the bottom of the frame.

Nell had been told the swallows would be gone by the first week of September, so when she found one still working the orchard at Lower Pell on the fourth, low over the rows of Discovery apples, she stopped with the pruning hook in her hand and watched it. Her grandfather's cage hung from a nail in the packing shed, its little brass door hooked open the way he had left it the morning he died. Inside sat a goldfinch that had long since stopped singing.

"You'll have to let him go, you know," said Mr Okafor from the next row, not unkindly. He had taken over the picking contract that spring and had a habit of saying what the orchard needed. Nell said nothing. She carried the cage to the bench beside the old espaliers, sat down with a cup of cold tea, and waited, the way her grandfather used to wait for the swallows to decide the year was over.

The swallow came back to the shed roof at dusk, circling twice before dropping to the gutter. Nell did not move. The finch shifted on its perch, turned its head, and then, slowly, as if it had only been waiting for permission, it stepped onto the open door and sat there in the last of the light.

Nell lifted the cage down and tipped it wide. The swallow went up over the apples without looking back. The finch stayed on the threshold a long while before it flew too, and she thought the orchard was perhaps the only place in England where a thing could be let out and still feel kept.
