Lighthouse on rocks on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small lighthouse sits on a rocky outcrop, drawn in thin black outline with light hatching on the rocks and tower. The tattoo is shown in black ink on a light skin tone, with the forearm sleeve rolled up over a red polka dot shirt. The background is dark, which keeps the focus on the design near the wrist.

The keeper's daughter carried the lamp oil up the hundred and twelve steps every dusk, because her father's knees had gone the way of the sea wall. The rock beneath the tower was grey and cracked like an old plate, and the gulls sat on it in rows as if waiting to be counted. Nobody on the mainland had ever asked what the light was for. They only asked whether it still burned.

One November the fog came in thick as wool and stayed nine days. On the seventh night a fishing boat called the Marigold struck the ledge below the tower, and the keeper's daughter heard the timbers break over the wind. She wicked the lamp higher than she had ever dared, polished the glass with her sleeve, and turned the great lens by hand until her arms shook. Out in the grey, a man shouted a name that was not his own, and then another voice answered him.
In the spring the Marigold's crew came out in a borrowed rowing boat with a sack of flour and a small brass bell. They rang it at the foot of the rock and did not climb. The keeper's daughter rang it back from the gallery rail, and the sound went out over the water like a question nobody needed to answer.
The bell still hangs in the lamp room. Her father used to say the light did not save anyone, only showed them where the rock was, and that was enough for a sensible man to steer by.
