Birdcage, bird and roses design sketch
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn tattoo design on paper showing an ornate birdcage with a small songbird perched above it, framed by large rose blooms and leaves. Chains hang from the cage and the bird, and a small skull-like shape sits among the flowers near the top. The linework is fine and sketched in dark blue-black ink, with light shading on the petals and leaves, and the composition runs vertically down the sheet.

Don't you touch that cage, boy, not while the lamp's still swinging. Sit where I can see your hands. That canary was worth more to the Marigold than the cook, the cargo and the captain's wig put together, and I'll have you know it sang through every blow between Bristol and the Horn.

Her name was Lady Prudence, and she lived in a cage of fine black wire with a little heart-shaped lock on the door, the key kept on a brass chain round the cook's neck. When the ship rolled she swung like a lantern, and the chain on the cage clinked against the rail, and the men swore it kept time with the pumps. Nobody aboard knew what a canary was for at sea, but we all knew what it meant when she went quiet.
Off the Horn the ice came down so thick the rigging stood white as bone, and one morning the cabin boy, Simeon, a thin lad who'd cried when the first sailor was buried, came up on deck with the key in his fist. He said the bird had been pining. The cook was asleep with his mouth open, so the boy turned the key and left the door swinging. Lady Prudence sat on the threshold a long while, then lifted off into a wind that would have knocked a grown man flat.
She followed us for three days, a grey speck above the topsail, until the captain said there was no sense hunting her. On the fourth morning she came down and settled on the cage, which Simeon had hung back on its hook, and sang the whole of a hymn nobody could name. So I never lock a door on anything that sings, boy. Mind your hands on that rope.
