Kneeling winged figure on a lower back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A kneeling female figure with her head bowed sits beneath two large feathered wings that sweep up and out across the skin. The feathers and figure are rendered in soft grey shading with darker tones under the wings and figure for depth. The design is centred on the lower torso, with the wing tips reaching toward the upper back and the picture cropped close to the waistband.

Marit had been sent up the cliff path before the tide turned, carrying a basket of salt cod and a message nobody in Vell wanted to deliver. The lighthouse keeper's daughter, Oona, had been kneeling at the edge of the chalk since dawn with her back to the village, and the gulls would not come near her.

The wings were the first thing Marit noticed. They rose from Oona's shoulders like two grey sails half furled, the feathers dark at the root and paling toward the tips, as if they had been drawn in charcoal and then rubbed with a thumb. Oona did not lift her head. "They sent you," she said. "Tell them I am not coming down."
Marit set the basket down anyway. Inside, wrapped in oilcloth, was the bread her mother baked on Sundays, still warm, and beneath it a brass bell the parish had rung for every drowned boat since the old king's time. Nobody had told her why it had been packed. She thought perhaps the village had decided that a woman who could not fly might at least be called home.
Oona reached out and touched the bell with one finger. It rang once, low, and somewhere below the cliff a man shouted from a boat. Oona lifted her head, and for the first time that morning one wing shivered and opened a little wider toward the water. "Ring it again," she said. "Ring it until they come up the path."
