Rodent with leafy tail on upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line outline of a small rodent-like creature with its head angled downward and whiskers drawn at the snout. Its long tail curls up and over toward the shoulder, ending in three small leaf shapes. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the tattoo sits against plain skin on a purple background.

Tuesday, 03:10. Ward 7 is quiet except for the drip pump in bay C, which clicks like a bad clock. I've been on nights a fortnight and have stopped pretending I don't talk to the mice. Sister Okonkwo says the trust will send the pest people by Friday. But I found the leaf and thought about the one tree in the car park between the mortuary and the bins, and how far a mouse would have to haul a leaf in its teeth to get it here. Nobody carries a leaf that far for no reason. I wrote the thought on the back of my hand so I wouldn't lose it before handover.
At 03:40 I propped the cupboard door with a folded bedpan box, put a cracker crumb on the floor and sat on the linen trolley with my cold tea. It came out at ten to four, stopped at the leaf, and then did the thing I'll remember: it pulled the leaf back towards the sluice, slowly, the way you'd tow a small boat in against the tide.
At seven, Sister Okonkwo found the trap untouched and three more leaves tucked into the bin of clean gowns. "Leave it," she said, and didn't look up from the drugs book. I wrote the cupboard into the handover with the door still propped, and went home with my hand smelling of cracker and October.
