Bite Me script tattoo on the lower lip

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a handwritten script reading Bite Me, followed by a small outlined heart, set across the lower lip. The lettering is in dark blue-black ink with smooth, even strokes, and the lip's pink tone sits behind it. The tight crop shows the mouth, teeth and chin, with two fingers holding the lip taut.

He made a wager with the Hughes brothers that he would have the words Bite Me inked on his bottom lip by Saturday. So he climbed the stairs above the chemist's to see Gwen Prothero, who did her tattooing with a needle boiled in a tin pan and a steady hand she'd learned from sewing shrouds. She had no patience for dares. She asked him once whether he was sure, and he said the Hughes brothers were watching through the window, and she sighed and set to work. The ink was blue-black, made from soot and gall and something she would not name, and a small heart curled after the words like a full stop he had not earned.

Saturday came. The Hughes brothers paid up their shilling with bad grace, and Cyril strutted home swollen and proud. At supper his mother looked at him over the potatoes and said nothing at all. Not a word, all week, and the lip stayed sore and the heart stayed stubborn. Cyril learned then that a boast written on the body keeps its promise long after the boaster has forgotten the bet, and that a heart is the only part of a dare that can't be taken back.
