The mark had been in the ledger since 1861, a single glyph in the margin beside each commission, and nobody in the foundry yard could say what it meant. Hetty found the book wedged under the bench while she was clearing out her father's things, its spine split and its pages smelling of graphite and wet wool. Every bell that had left Cole's yard carried its own tally of strokes, but this sign had no number beside it, only a pencilled note: *for the dead, not the tower.*

She took the ledger down the lane to Mrs Abbott, who had kept the church accounts for forty years and trusted nothing that did not add up. They sat with it under the vestry lamp. Mrs Abbott ran a fingertip along the loops and said the dots were counts of something, and the two small hanging rings were clappers that had never been hung.

Hetty went back to the yard that night. Among the casting moulds she found a bronze bell no bigger than a thimble, the sort a child might wear on a ribbon, and beside it a coil of fine wire. She threaded two rings onto the wire the way the sketch showed, then the dots, then the long curl that ran back into itself like a fern uncoiling.

In the morning she hung it in the lych gate, where the wind could find it. It rang once, so softly that only the sexton heard, and he took off his cap and said nothing.
