Fine line script quote on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a fine line script quote running diagonally across a bare upper arm or shoulder, with the first word partly hidden by a thin strap. The thin, even linework is set in dark ink against warm, sepia-toned skin. A smiling mouth and a hand with a ring sit in the foreground, and the image is framed tightly with a dark background.

The oven at the Pelham bakery gave out on a Tuesday, two hours before the carts were due, and Ada stood in the dark with the iron door open and no notion of what to tell the carter. A boy came up the lane with a lantern and a coil of rope over his shoulder. His name was Tom Hebb, and he was bound for the harbour to ship out on the Margaret, but he stopped at the smell of smoke and studied the chimney the way a man studies a lame horse. He found the damper jammed solid with a wren's nest, pried it free with a bent spoon, and grinned at her with soot to his ears.
They fired the old bread oven at the back, the one her husband had bricked up years before, and worked until the window went grey. The loaves came out brown and split and steaming. Then the sky turned pale over the sea, the Margaret's bell rang across the roofs, and Tom stood in the doorway looking at the water and not moving.
Ada wrapped four loaves in a cloth and pressed them into his arms. The tide won't wait for you, she said. Something happens for a reason, my mother used to say. He said he had never believed that. She said she didn't much either, but the bread was warm and the boat was already gone, and she had a feeling he would be back for the next batch. He came back on the Friday. She had chalked the words on the slate above the door, in her careful hand, as if they had always been there.
