Mandala sea turtle on an upper arm
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A sea turtle is formed from an ornate mandala, with its shell built from a central star of dotted petals surrounded by rings of scalloped and lined segments. The flippers and head extend from the circular shell, and the design is rendered in fine dots and clean black outlines. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against a pale background, with the arm filling most of the frame.

The net came up heavy off the Dogger that morning, and Harry Pell swore at it the way he swore at everything his father had left behind on the boat. My father had a rule about turtles: you cut them free, you never haul them in. But the thing tangled in the mesh was no turtle in the ordinary sense. It was a shell as wide as a dinner plate, patterned in rings of dark and pale like the inside of a clock, and when Harry got his gloves on it, the rings were made of tiny dots, thousands of them, pressed into the carapace one by one.

He brought it to me in the wheelhouse because I was the only one aboard who had ever bothered with drawing. I took my pencil to the back of a tide table and tried to copy the centre, a star of dotted petals that seemed to pull the eye inward until the rest of the world went soft. Around it ran scalloped rings, each one a little bolder, and at the edge the flippers spread like the arms of a clock hand. I drew it three times before I got the spacing right. Harry watched the sea through the window the whole time and didn't say a word.
We let the creature go on the slack tide, somewhere past the buoy with the bent top. It paddled off with that slow, deliberate pride and was gone inside a minute. Harry asked me what I'd drawn on the tide table, and I showed him. He folded it into his oilskin and kept it there, and every season after, when the nets came up empty, he'd take it out and look at the star for a while before he baited the hooks again.
