Black and grey peony flash design

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A drawn tattoo design of three peony blooms with layered petals and several leaves, arranged in a vertical cluster on a white sheet of paper. The bold black outlines are paired with stippled dot shading that gives the petals and the dark centres depth. The design is shown in black and grey only, with the sheet photographed flat on a wooden surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nan Halloran had carried the peony roots down the valley in a flour sack, wrapped in wet newspaper, because her husband said no flower would survive a village where the sky was the colour of a coal scuttle. She planted them behind the wash-house anyway, in ground the men had tipped slack onto for years, and told the children that anything could grow if it was stubborn enough and watered from the right tap.

The first spring they produced three blooms, heavy as fists, their petals folded over one another like shirts in a drawer. The colliers came past on their way to the shift and stopped to look, which they did not do for anything that had no price. Their wives cut the flowers and carried them to the chapel. The dark hearts of the blooms were as black as the seams the men worked, and when the wind got under the petals it dusted the chapel steps with soot-coloured specks, and nobody swept it off.

In the autumn of the bad roof fall, the manager ordered the wash-house pulled down to make a stable for the pit ponies. Nan went out with a spade and a lamp and dug up the roots by hand until her knuckles bled. She carried them to the pit head in the sack and tied them to the cage hook, the way the men hung their tins, and the cage went down with the roots and came up again with nothing but the damp.

Nobody in the village could say how the peonies came back that year, or why they grew out of the shaft gratings. But on the morning the men were sent down again, every hook at the pit head had a bloom tied to it, and the colliers went below with flowers in their caps, and the dust on their backs was never quite as black as it had been before.
