Black and grey phoenix across a shoulder blade
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A phoenix with outstretched feathered wings and a detailed head sweeps diagonally across the upper back, with a round shape behind the wing. Soft grey shading gives the feathers volume, while smooth black swirls fan out below into smoke-like forms that fade into the skin. The tattoo is shown in black and grey only, photographed from behind with the subject's head and shoulder partly cropped.

The hall smelled of floor polish and cold sausage rolls, and Dennis Okafor was still calling me Mouse across the trestle tables as if thirty years were a rumour he had heard about someone else. I nodded, counted the fire exits out of habit, and that was when I saw Leanne Pryce by the stage steps, holding a paper cup of squash as though someone might take it from her.

We had not spoken since the summer the art block burned. Everyone knew the story the way they knew the school motto. Leanne had been in the kiln room after hours, the fire had started in the glaze cupboard, and she was sent away before the inquiry finished. Mr Hale, who taught ceramics and liked to say a kiln only ever gives back what you put in it, never said which of us he blamed. Leanne went to a sixth form in another county. I went to a job in Stockport and stayed there for twenty years.
"You still owe me a kiln shelf," she said, and then she laughed, which I had forgotten she could do. In the car park afterwards, under the sodium lamps, she told me she restored old church glass now, in a workshop above a bakery in Halifax, lead came and slow patience. The fire had not finished her, she said. It had only taught her what could be rebuilt if you were willing to sit with the cinders.
She drove off first. I stayed by the gate until the caretaker came out to rattle the padlock, and I realised I had been gripping my keys so hard the metal had printed itself into my palm. Above the science block the moon sat in a gap between the clouds, round and pale, like a coin someone had forgotten to spend.
