Two parallel lines band on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a forearm with two thin, solid black lines running parallel around the arm, forming a band. The lines are crisp and even, with the upper line slightly longer in visual weight than the lower one. The arm is set against a plain brown background, with a dark green sweater sleeve and cream top at the edges of the frame.

Nobody tells you the wire is the easy part. Old Mercer strings it between two poles behind the dodgems every Monday morning, and by Wednesday the wind has tuned it like a fiddle string. You stand at the end of the field with the balancing pole across your shoulders and watch him pace it out, heel to toe, counting under his breath in a language he won't teach you.

He had a rule about the second line. Every rig wants a guide cable slung a hand's width below the wire, close enough to touch and far enough to ignore. 'Look at the wire,' he said, 'and the wire will look after you. Look at the cable and you'll be in the sawdust by teatime.' You didn't believe him until the Thursday at Hartlepool, when a gull came down across the top line and the whole rig shivered, and your eyes slid to the lower one out of plain fright.
Afterwards he sat on the generator box eating chips out of the paper and said nothing for a long time. Then he tossed you the last chip and said the lines were always the same distance apart, however far you walked, and that was the only true thing in the business.
You walked the wire that night with the lamps going out one by one over the waltzers, the two lines glinting ahead of you like a pair of rails leading somewhere you had not yet been, and you did not once look down.
